Blackberry Bold 9000 Icon for Mac OS X

This little tip is for those souls out there adventurous enough to use the Blackberry Bold / Mac OS X combo. If you that use a Blackberry on Max OS X with “Disk mode” or “Mass storage” enabled, you are able to read and write files to your Blackberry’s SD card from your desktop or the finder. However, the drive icon that shows up in the finder when your mobile device is plugged into the Mac is the boring generic drive icon. This is all well and good, but here’s a little tip that shows you how to modify the generic drive icon for your Blackberry to a more suitable one.

First off, I hear some people ask why bother changing the icon? Well, here are a couple of reasons that prompted me to do so:

There has been a rare occasion where I may have mistook the generic drive icon used when my Bold was plugged in for another one of my drives and accidentally deleted or moved files to this folder.
Having a specific icon for your phone when its plugged into your mac also shows you whether the device has been mounted or not with one quick glance and without reading the names for each of your mounted drives – this is useful if you tend to have lots of drives that you work with.
It just looks so much better!

Here’s a little tip to allow you to customize the icon such that it displays a more appropriate icon.

How to customize the Blackberry Bold 9000 icon for Mac OS X:

Plug your Blackberry Bold 9000 into your Mac’s USB port and enable “Mass Storage” or “Disk Mode” – it should now show up on your desktop and in the finder.
Download Blackberry Bold Icon for Mac OS X (2028) and extract the archive on your SD Card of your Bold (the icon itself is invisible so unless you may not see it in the finder).
Done! You may need to Eject the drive and re-insert it back into your Mac to see the new icon in effect.

Alternate Method:

If the above fails to work for you, here’s another way of achieving the same result.

Step 1: Get the Icon file: Blackberry Bold Icon for Mac OS X (original) (1513)

Step 2: Copy the icon to the clipboard

Click on this file from the Finder
Choose ‘Get Info’ from the ‘File’ menu.
In the info window that pops up, click on the icon
Choose ‘Copy’ from the ‘Edit’ menu.
Close the info window

Step 3: Paste the icon to the desired item

Go to the item in the Finder that you want a custom icon
Click the item (file, folder, disk, etc)
Choose ‘Get Info’ from the ‘File’ menu.
In the info window that pops up, click on the icon
Choose ‘Paste’ from the ‘Edit’ menu.
Close the info window

One of the best explanations of Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle and the observer effect is illustrated in this animated youtube video.

Simply put, the Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle states that:

The uncertainty principle is a manifestation of the observer effect.

Its also beautifully illustrates another very infamous thought experiment, put forth by Erwin Schrödinger in the 1930s known as “Schrödinger’s Cat” – where the principle of quantum super-positioning may be applied everyday objects.

Nokia announces Geo-Location aware chat software

Nokia’s beta applications website recently launched “nokia chat” – an IM application which lets you share your status and your geographical location with your friends.

The software basically allows one to get instant geographical notification of where their friends are by pinpointing your location on a map.
Location aware chat, that updates your messages based on your geographical location if you choose to share your location.
Update your status…. dont we need more of these around
Chat based on XMPP/Jabber protocol, interoperable with GoogleTalk and mxit.

Pricing and ordering your iPhone 3G in South Africa…

I have had and seen a number of queries on this site and around the web (and offline) regarding the imminent arrival of the iphone here in South Africa, regarding pricing details, when it will eventually be available to South Africans etc etc.

Pricing

Officially, all we know is that it will be available through vodacom and that the global price set by apple for this beauty will be under USD$200.00 (around ZAR

1600 as at 12 July 2008). However, this USD $200 is maximum the add-in price you would be expected to pay, if you were getting the iphone on a contract from vodacom. This is much less than what one would be expected to pay if you intended on buying the device for prepaid usage. For pre-paid (or pay as you go) customers, the price will give a nasty sting. Expect to pay somewhere between ZAR4500 – ZAR5500 – and that only for the 8GB. Whilst most apple fanboys (and gals!) should easily be able afford afford this, it may be a little too expensive for the average joe on the street. Obviously, Vodacom South Africa is yet to release its official pricing figures – so the price listed above is just a guestimate based on other official prices from around the world. The 8GB beauty is selling for AUD 729 (ZAR 5400 as at 12 July 2008) from the Australian carrier Optus and the 16GB version retails for prepaid customers at AUD 849 (ZAR 6320 as at 12 July 2008). Interestingly enough, Swisscom from Switzerland has much better pricing – CHF 519 for the 8GB and CHF 619 for the 16GB (ZAR 3900 for 8GB and 4700 for the 16GB).

What would be interesting to see, are the contract plans that vodacom would have on offer. The wireless mobile data industry is alive and thriving here in SA with technology like 3G and HSDPA – partly due to competetion between the service providers and partly due to Telkoms fixed line services failing to deliver. In other countries, the “data plans” that come with the iphone have been very disappointing – will vodacom follow suite or will they stick to their current data rates on the iphone?

Ordering

So, how do you get your hands on one of these beauties – well the official apple website’s page for South African customers points us to vodacom, who have set up a micro-site for “pre-ordering” your iphone. No pricing or availability details as yet though. Signup and a rep from vodacom’s iphone sales team will be in contact when she is ready.

Another company trying to cash in on the new iphone hype is smartcom – anyone heard of them before? They have the vodacom logo and theme on their site and even their logo looks vodafonesque. Anyways, they too have set up a micro-site where you can add your details to their database and as soon as the powers that be decide its time, the smartcom sales team will be intouch. Both sites above have even bought google adwords – so searching for anything with iphone related keywords is sure to drive them lots of traffic.

In meat space, you could currently walk into a vodashop and also have it pre-ordered.

Mozilla Firefox 3 – resources roundup

Firefox, the super web browser from the Mozilla Foundation has now finally reached its 3rd incarnation. Firefox 3 will be officially released on Tuesday July 17th 2008.

To bring you upto speed with the latest and greatest features of the upcoming release of Firefox, Deb Richardson of Mozilla has compiled the excellent Field Guide to Firefox 3 – a must read for anybody interested in the new features of this amazing web browser.

The Spread Firefox Campaign intends to make history on the relase of the new Firefox 3 by having the most number of downloads on a single day. All you have to do is head over to the mozilla website and download Firefox 3 with 24 hours of the July 17th release date – that will set a Guinness World Record for the most number of downloads in a day.
Christian Zibreg has also written a great article about Why Firefox 3 Matters, highlighting key issues and improvements over Firefox 2 such as Speed and performance improvements, better built-in security features, improved bookmarks management and offline support.

Deb Richardson also explains the recently redesigned address bar’s important new features:
- The site identification button – highlighting what each icon means in the site identification button, the site identification dialog and how this is better and more streamlined for your security.
- The improved bookmarks features and faster bookmarking with the new star button located on the right hand side of Firefox 3’s address bar. Also explained very well are the bookmark tags, the smart bookmark folders and the bookmark management dialog.
